As a packaging designer who’s spent years helping Australian brands navigate the sustainability landscape, I’ve witnessed a remarkable shift in our industry. In 2025, sustainable packaging isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s become a strategic necessity that’s reshaping how brands connect with their audience and build long-term loyalty.
Let’s explore five sustainable design trends that are gaining serious momentum in 2025, with real examples from forward-thinking Australian brands that are leading the charge.
1. MONO-MATERIAL PACKAGING SOLUTIONS
When it comes to recyclability, simpler is better. Mono-material packaging (using just one type of material instead of complex combinations) is making recycling more straightforward and effective for everyone involved.
I’ve seen firsthand how brands using single material containers (where caps can be recycled along with the bottle, for instance) make the recycling process infinitely more successful.
Why it matters: By designing packaging from a single material like PET, HDPE, or paper, your products are much more likely to be properly recycled. This approach creates higher quality recycled materials and helps close the loop on waste.
Australian example: It appears that People Haircare uses mono-materials for both bottle and caps of their shampoo and conditioner range, making them highly recyclable as one piece. Interestingly, they don’t prominently communicate this benefit, which is a missed opportunity!
Note: Colour consistency is crucial too, a white or clear mono-material container is far more desirable as a recycled material than mixed colours.

02. SMART PACKAGING FOR TRANSPARENCY
Transparency is currency in today’s market. Smart packaging technology is revolutionising how brands communicate their sustainability credentials directly to consumers.
The collaboration between APCO and GS1 Australia has made it easier than ever for brands to integrate detailed sustainability information into their packaging through barcodes and the National Product Catalogue. Meanwhile, tools like the Sustainability Tracker app are empowering consumers to make informed choices before they buy through a simple scan of the barcode.
The Australian Recycling Label (ARL) Check Locally label takes this on-pack communications a step further with location-specific recycling information, helping consumers understand exactly how to dispose of packaging responsibly in their area.
Why it matters: Transparency builds trust. Today’s Australian consumers want to align with brands that value authenticity and accountability. Smart packaging builds trust while making it simpler for eco-minded shoppers to choose your products. In many cases these track and trace technologies offer valuable data to help brand owners better understand the true impact they are making.
Australian example: Zero Co. uses QR codes to share material origins and environmental impact information, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability while giving consumers the transparency they crave.
03. REFILL & REUSE SYSTEMS
The refill movement has gained serious momentum in Australia over the past few years. From deposit schemes and at-home refill concentrates to in-store dispensing stations, brands are finding innovative ways to reduce packaging waste without compromising convenience.
Why it Matters: Consumers are actively seeking ways to reduce single-use plastics. By embracing refill and reuse systems, you can tap into this demand while demonstrating your commitment to sustainability. It also builds loyalty, customers invest in “forever bottles” and return again and again for refills.
Example: Pioneers like Zero Co., Skipper, and Thankyou are proving that refill systems can be beautifully designed, commercially viable and environmentally responsible. Their success shows that Australian consumers are ready and willing to embrace refill solutions when thoughtfully designed.
“Our ForeverFill™ system cuts household plastic waste by 97%, replacing single-use products with durable Forever Bottles and recyclable, paper-based refills.” – Zero Co.
04. RECYCLED CONTENT REVOLUTION
Incorporating recycled materials into your packaging isn’t just environmentally responsible, it’s increasingly becoming both a consumer expectation and a regulatory requirement.
Why it Matters: Using post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials significantly reduces your environmental footprint while supporting Australia’s recycling industry and 2030 circular economy goals. Brands incorporating recycled content now will stay ahead of compliance while appealing to eco-conscious consumers.
Example: In 2022, Etch & Ethos developed Australia’s first 50% recycled content rHDPE bottle for skincare. Today, numerous brands are following suit, with Swisse using 50% PCR in their Ultivites supplement caps (working towards 80%), and brands like Growth Bomb, Sukin, Bosistos, Thankyou, Akin and many more incorporating between 30-100% recycled content in their packaging.
5. TAKING RESPONSIBILITY WITH EPR SCHEMES
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes are transforming how brands approach packaging design by making them accountable for the entire lifecycle of their packaging. While the EU and UK have already implemented EPR schemes for packaging, Australia is expected to follow by 2026.
Why it Matters: For forward-thinking brands, EPR schemes offer an opportunity to demonstrate environmental leadership while future-proofing your packaging strategy in anticipation of regulatory changes.
In Australia, organisations like APCO are helping brands align with the 2030 Packaging Strategy, mandating that all packaging must be reusable, recyclable or compostable. While government is working on investing in infrastructure and industry guidance needed for this transition to be possible.
